The Burrito or Hypothermia Wrap A widely applied method to protect a victim of hypothermia is called the Burrito Wrap . The name seems to come from the method used to serve burritos, with several layers of wrapping material, and the result looking like an oblong cocoon. It may also be called a Hypo Wrap (for hypothermia).  Improvised Burrito Wrap for Marine SAR The material below proposes a Burrito Wrap modified for marine search and rescue where the victim has been pulled from the water or taken off a boat suffering from exposure. That is, the victim has been immersed in salt water or has wet clothing from salt spray, rain, or snow. It is assumed that medical treatment, e.g., BC Ambulance, will be available nearby and the RCMSAR vessel will be used to transport the victim for further treatment. New Training Sub-folders in the RCMSAR-60 Google Workspace

A series of new sub-folders has been created in Unit 60’s Google Workspace. This is under the “Shared Drives”. When you are in the Workspace , look for a shared drive called “Training” and drill down to “Training Topics”. File Structure within “Training > Training Topics” Beyond that there are ten sub-folders corresponding to the ten chapters in the SAR Crew Manual. Within each of these sub-folders is a PDF of that chapter plus, for some topics, additional material.  Some sub-folders already have some extra content. Others have nothing but the PDF of the chapter from the manual. The contents of the sub-folders will be expanded as more training material is incorporated.  There will be a post on the blog (this site) when any substantial content is added. So, stay tuned!

Member of Unit 60 mentioned in Times-Colonist article on BC lighthouses

Celeste MacKenzie, member of Unit 60 for many years, was mentioned in an article in today's Times-Colonist. Celeste will be remembered in the Unit for her enthusiasm, the excellent training on hypothermia she provided to our members, and many other contributions. Celeste joined Unit 60 in October 2018 and completed the Crew Course in May 2019. During her active time with Unit 60 she went out on 12 SAR missions. She is currently inactive due to her commitments as a lighthouse keeper on Ivory Island, about 20 nautical miles northwest of Bella Bella.  See the PDF below for a copy of the article.
